Messier 31 - The Andromeda Galaxy
Messier 31, is more commonly known as the Andromeda Galaxy (also designated NGC 224).
It is a barred spiral galaxy and is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. It was
originally named the Andromeda Nebula. Andromeda has a diameter of about 152,000 light-years
and is approximately 2.5 million light-years) from Earth. The galaxy's name stems from the
area of the sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda. It contains over 1 trillion stars.
On a clear dark night, away from city lights, it is the farthest object that can be seen with the unaided eye.
The small fuzzy object below it is Messier 32, a satellite galaxy of Messier 31. The other smaller,
bright fuzzy star above it is Messier 110, another satellite galaxy of Messier 31.
