Messier 34 - The Spiral Cluster
Messier 34 (also known NGC 1039, or the Spiral Cluster)
is a large and relatively near open cluster in the
constellation of Perseus. It was probably discovered
by Giovanni Batista Hodierna before 1654 and was included
by Charles Messier in his catalog of comet-like objects
in 1764.
It is about 1,500 light-years from Earth. It contains
about 400 stars in an area of about 7.5 light-years in
diameter.
